Appraisal

Our Approach

 When an insurance company agrees a loss is covered but disputes the amount or the cost of damage, the appraisal process can be an effective way to resolve the disagreement without litigation. Appraisal focuses on determining the true value of a claim, not whether coverage exists.


We represent policyholders throughout the insurance appraisal process, helping ensure the scope and value of damages are properly evaluated. Whether the claim involves residential, commercial, or complex property losses, we guide clients through appraisal with clarity and strategy.


Our role in the appraisal process includes:


  • Reviewing the policy to confirm appraisal rights and requirements


  •  Court motions and negotiations to appoint impartial umpires
     
  • Assisting in the selection of qualified, impartial appraisers
     
  • Coordinating with experts to support accurate damage valuations
     
  • Protecting our clients’ interests if disputes arise during or after appraisal
     

Appraisal can be a powerful tool when used correctly. Our goal is to help policyholders achieve a fair and accurate valuation of their loss while avoiding unnecessary delay and expense.

How the Appraisal Process Works

  •  Each side selects an appraiser
    The policyholder selects one appraiser, and the insurance company selects another. These appraisers are responsible for independently evaluating the damage.
     
  • An umpire is selected
    If the two appraisers cannot agree on the value, an impartial umpire is chosen to resolve the differences.
     
  • The value is determined
    If two of the three agree, the appraisal award becomes binding as to the amount of the loss.

Why Legal Guidance Matters in Appraisal

 Although appraisal is not litigation, it is still a contractual process governed by the insurance policy. Mistakes during appraisal can limit recovery, waive rights, or lead to unnecessary disputes later.
